PV Efficiency Of 12 Percent And Cost-Per-Watt Of Less Than One Dollar By 2012
This will be awesome... and the more people buy, the lower the cost will go.
I am needing to redo the shingles on my roof as they are starting to wear; however, I don't want to replace them with just any roofing material.
Looking at the options, there's a lot---some of which the structure of my house will, sadly, not support. My goal is to find an energy-efficient roofing material that reflects most of the heat, unlike the common asphalt shingles found on most roofs today.
Solar panel shingles are great, but, sadly, due to the color, I don't feel they would offer much of a benefit other than offsetting the resulting heat gain in summer due to their color (dark gray to black). In winter, however, it would be a benefit in keeping the house warm while making electricity.
Always remember, though, the hotter any solar panel gets, the less efficient it is.
I've been thinking about a raised metal roof, which then could be retrofitted with a rolled-out solar panel system. This would allow the roof to be covered with solar panels, with the added benefit of ventilation between the metal roofing and the decking essentially shading the house.
Need to do my research on all of this, but that is what's on my mind right now.
